After installing this new-construction window, I made the exterior trim from Azek cellular PVC instead of wood. No problems with paint peeling or water damage.
To revive this old garage, we installed some new windows. But the nailing flanges had to go over the existing wood siding, so we applied some simple wood trim to conceal the nailing flanges.
On this project we were able to cut away the wood siding to make a "trough" for the 1x4 door casing.
Instead of keeping the original brickmold trim, I applied 1x4 trim made from cellular PVC, and then installed the door.
While replacing the siding, we decided to rebuild the "water table" trim with low-maintenance PVC trimboards.

When a section of vinyl siding gets cracked or broken, it's easy to replace the bad piece... if you can find new siding that matched the original color.
This fairly new house had a water leak in the basement during or after a heavy rainstorm. It turned out the problem was behind the vinyl siding.
The best way to install vinyl siding around an electrical box is to install a vinyl J-block, which conceals and retains the cut edges of the siding.

While remodeling this garage, we needed new wood siding to fill in some new sections of wall beside the garage door.
One piece of Masonite siding had some rot damage, so I simply replaced it by prying out some nails and fastening the new siding in place.
While painting the house I discovered some soft and rotten wood on a window sill, so I cut our the bad wood and installed a new custom-cut window sill.
When the redwood siding on this garage had a rotten patch that wasn't very deep, I decided to try filling the bad area with a thin strip of wood and some putty.
Instead of filling up the room's only window with an air conditioner, I made a clean opening in the wall for the A/C.

Replacing the old wood siding wasn't the question... the issue was what type of new siding to use.
New wood siding is authentic but expensive and requires frequent maintenance. Vinyl siding was out of the question. Fiber cement siding gave us the clean lines of real wood without the hassle and expense of repainting every 5 to 8 years.
To provide a clean, smooth base for foam insulation and new siding, we removed all the old wood clapboards.
When changing exterior siding, there is an opportunity to add more insulation. We added 1/2 inch thick rigid foam, which barely changed the thickness of the wall.

HardiPlank® fiber cement siding goes up quickly when fastened with a coil roofing nail gun. We cut the siding with a special dust-collecting saw, but other tools also work well.
We even cut boards with a special wavy pattern to match the century-old original siding design.
